Best Mouse Bait

Is cheese really the best mouse bait?
We have a mouse problem in the basement. We've caught a couple in our standard mouse traps, but there is at least one mouse still on the loose. The traps have been out for 2 weeks and still haven't caught it (or them). So is cheese really the best bait for the trap (we have some sharp cheddar), or is there another common household food that is better? Thanks! By the way, we have not tried using ANY bait at all so far.

Best mouse bait to trap one?
I cant find the damned peanut butter does anyone know anything else, I was thinking nutella? Or maybe some marshmallows and such. Im using a non lethal bucket trap by the way.
